A very compelling games of all times is the word relay teaching your students to improve their vocabulary. This is good for small or big group of students wherein each will generate words in response to making a sentence using words that start with “A” for example “alienated”She was alienated in her peer group. Then, it will continue on and on until all the learners delivered their own sentence in the group. The main goal is the student will consolidate new vocabs.

Duration of Activity:

  • 5-15 minutes
  • small indoor space (e.g. classroom)
  • Emotional and interaction skills

How to Play:

  1. 1. First, letter is chosen with the participants in the game.
  2. 2. After that, take turns inventing words starting with that letter that make up the story. For example, the letter A: The alligator lives in a swampy pool.
  3. 3. The one who cannot come up with a word starting with the agreed letter to continue the story loses, and the winner gets to choose the next letter with which to start a new story.
    The game can be made a little easier by inventing only words without a story, e.g. animals starting with the letter a, or make it more difficult by inventing e.g. English words.

Your word relay can be used with different themes. It is important to consider the level of your ESL students and the category of words that you will be using. You can start from the most common category like fruits, vegetables or food.
