Noun and Verbs in a Sentence

Overview:

Hello! How are you? Today, we will learn how to create a simple 3-word sentence using a noun and a verb. By combining a noun and a verb, we can make short, clear sentences that tell what someone or something is doing. For example, we can say “Cat eats fish” or “Boy reads book.” In this lesson, you will practice making your own 3-word sentences. By the end, you will be able to read and say your sentences with confidence!

Lesson:

Do you have an idea what a noun and a verb is? If you forgot, let us refresh your knowledge and define what is a verb and a noun.

Nouns are naming words that names a person, place or thing which helps us determine the subject of  a sentence – who, what and where.  Several examples are: Logan, Morgan, Trisha, Selena and Darius which tells us the name of a person. Los Angeles, Manila, Cebu, Italy and China which tells us the name of a specific place.Apart from that nouns also name things, such as,  book, cup, table, bike, and towel. Through nouns, we are able to clearly define the subject of our sentences.

On the other hand, verbs pertain to an action committed by someone or something that is happening in the sentence. Some examples are: running, walking, washing, cooking and eating. These verbs define what the subject is doing in the sentence.

Now let’s put these together, and  construct sentences following the pattern: I + Verb + Noun.

  1. I ride a bike
  2. I cook breakfast
  3. I wash the cup
  4. I visited Cebu
  5. I cleaned the table
  6. I read a book.
  7. I draw a picture.
  8. I play a game.
  9. I open the door.
  10. I carry a bag.

These are only some samples of sentences that follow the pattern I + verb + noun. Apart from this pattern, we can also change our structure to: Noun + verb + noun. As we mentioned earlier, nouns name a specific person who can be the doer of an action on a specific thing or place – noun.

Some example sentences are:

  1. Morgan rode a bike
  2. Darius solved the puzzle
  3. Trisha cooked lunch
  4. Melinda drove her car.
  5. Denise carried the books
  6. Alex kicked the ball.
  7. Sofia painted a picture.
  8. Brian opened the door.
  9. Lena washed the dishes.
  10. Kevin wrote a letter.

For the first sentence, we can tell that it was Morgan (Noun) who rode (verb) a bike (noun). The same goes for the other two sample sentences. In these samples, the nouns function both as the doer and receiver of an action.

In some of the sentences, you can notice that we had to utilize particles like a and the to come up with a coherent sentence.

A and The are particles that help further in making the meaning of the sentence more clear. This doesn’t change the meaning or affect the verb in any way, rather it helps specify further the noun or the verb. For example, “a” lets us know that the noun is singular. In a sentence, “ I ate a banana” which means that the speaker ate one banana. In one of the sentences above, “ I ride a bike”, the particle “a” shows  us that the noun is general or not specified. Similarly, the particle “the” also functions the same way in the sentences mentioned above.
