
To continue with the recent blog on: Ako Ay Ready! Learning Tagalog One Sentence at a Time, recalling “ako” means “I” in English. The word “ay” is a marker used in formal sentence structure. It connects the subject (ako) to the rest of the sentence. The verb tells the action.
So the formula is:
Ako + ay + verb
Let’s have a refresher on Tagalog verbs. Check these simple Tagalog present tense verbs (regular forms) that you as a beginner can use with the pattern: Ako ay + verb.These Tagalog verbs describe everyday actions or routines.
UM- Verbs (Present Tense)
These usually repeat the first syllable.
- kumakain – eating
Ako ay kumakain. - umiinom – drinking
Ako ay umiinom. - pumapasok – going to school/work
Ako ay pumapasok. - bumibili – buying
Ako ay bumibili. - tumatakbo – running
Ako ay tumatakbo. - natutulog – sleeping
Ako ay natutulog. - nagigising – waking up

Ako ay umuuwi. - bumabangon – getting up
Ako ay bumabangon. - sumasagot – answering
